Religion

Rohingya families are predominantly religious. They are Sunni Muslims and strict followers of Islamic traditions. Drinking alcohol and living together without marriage is not allowed in Islam. Although polygamy is allowed in Islam, many Rohingyas prefer monogamy. In every village there is at least a mosque, and some have madrasa (Islamic education centers). Their births, marriages and funerals are performed according to Islamic law. Most Rohingyas pray five times a day, fast in the month of Ramadan, give alms, and if able, go to perform Hajj at Makkah once in their lifetime. They celebrate religious festivals with great joy and enthusiasm; great rejoicing marks the two Eid holidays, Edal Fitr and Eidoi Azha.
